How Call in Studio Works / FAQ
Using Rodecaster with Call in Studio
The Rodecaster Pro II and Rodecaster Duo let you run Call in Studio and your broadcasting software on the same computer using one USB cable between the mixer and computer.
The key is the RØDECaster's separate Chat audio channel. Use Chat for Call in Studio's host connection, while your broadcasting software receives the complete show mix.
Note: The original Rodecaster Pro does not include the Chat audio channel. If you are purchasing a new mixer, we recommend the Duo or Pro II for best results.
Connect your equipment
Connect your microphone and headphones to the RØDECaster, then connect its USB 1 port to your computer using a USB data cable.
With the standard USB configuration, your computer will see separate RØDECaster Main and Chat audio devices. Their names include your model—for example, “RODECaster Duo Chat” or “RODECaster Pro II Chat.”
Set up Call in Studio
Start your show, then click Audio Only: WebRTC Connect Host in the Call in Studio console.
In the host connection window:
- Click Ready and allow microphone access.
- Select your RØDECaster's Chat device for Microphone.
- Select that same Chat device for Speaker / Headphones.
- Speak into your microphone and check the input meter, then connect.
Although the browser labels its input “Microphone,” the Chat device carries the mix that your RØDECaster sends to callers.
Enable mix-minus
Check that mix-minus is enabled for USB 1 Chat in your RØDECaster's output-routing settings.
Mix-minus sends your microphone and other included show audio to Call in Studio while leaving out the caller audio arriving on Chat. This prevents that audio from looping back to callers as an echo. You can still hear callers through your RØDECaster headphones and include them in your broadcast. See RØDE's explanation of mix-minus.
We recommend assigning USB Chat to a fader if you want convenient control of caller volume, and make sure it is unmuted and included in your main mix.
Set up your broadcasting software
Using your preferred broadcasting or recording application, select the RØDECaster's Main stereo mix as an audio input. This should include your microphone, Call in Studio callers, and any other sources you want in the broadcast.
For a straightforward setup, use the RØDECaster's standard stereo USB configuration. If you use RØDE's expanded virtual-device configuration, the full stereo mix may instead be available as System (RODECaster). See RØDE's virtual-device settings guide.
Capture the complete mixer feed once. Adding separate captures of the same microphone or browser caller audio can cause doubled sound or echo. Monitor through headphones connected to the RØDECaster, and avoid sending the broadcaster's monitored mix back into the mixer.
The result: Call in Studio receives the mix-minus feed through Chat, while your broadcaster receives the complete show through Main—all on one computer, through one USB cable.
Before going live, make a test call and a short recording. Confirm that callers hear you without hearing themselves echoed back, and that the recording includes both sides. Keep the Call in Studio host connection window open and connected throughout your show.
Note: If you purchase the Rodecaster Pro II or Rodecaster Duo through the links above, Call in Studio earns a commission on the sale.
